In the latest update of the classification of the “Academic Ranking of World Universities”, recently published by ShanghaiRanking, the University of Vigo has been placed for the first time among the top 200 universities in the world in the area of Telecommunications by the Research Center in Telecommunication Technologies, atlanTTic. It has also entered that select club of 200 universities in the area of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, where the contribution of atlanTTic, around 60% of the score, is complemented by researchers from other UVigo centers such as CINTECX. UVigo is the only Galician entity present in both categories, in a list that includes 300 universities in the case of Telecommunications and 500 in the case of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
The classification is based fundamentally on the impact of the research that is published in the scientific journals of the respective field. In this way, the University of Vigo is placed in the fourth place among the Spanish and Portuguese universities in Telecommunications, only behind the Polytechnic Universities of Catalonia and Valencia, and of the Carlos III University of Madrid. And all this with a smaller mass of researchers and publications than many of the best valued universities, such as Aveiro, Lisbon or the Polytechnic of Madrid, in addition to those already mentioned.
The impact of the University of Vigo in Electrical and Electronic Engineering is equally remarkable, occupying the sixth place among the Iberian universities, in a classification headed by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. This classification is led worldwide by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley.
