About Vigo

atlanTTic is located in the Vigo area. To better understand what this area can offer, two dimensions must be taken into account: the ecosystem dimension, that is, professional development within its research and technological environment; and, secondly, the human dimension, embodied by the social and nature facets. The two dimensions make up a life experience that it is worth knowing.

  • The University of Vigo

atlanTTic develops its research work at the University of Vigo (UVigo), being telecommunications one of its main focus on science and technology transfer to the industry.

The research groups of the Center play a very important role in the 24 million euros that the University of Vigo raised for R&D activities in 2012, amounting to over 20% of the total expenditure of Galicia in this area. During that year, UVigo created 618 R&D jobs, and 31 entrepreneurial initiatives, together with 144 technology transfer activities (almost 30% more than in 2011).

Researching at the University of Vigo meansworking within the framework of a campus of scientific excellence, the Campus de Excelencia do Mar. atlanTTic actively participates in this contributing with its advancements in environmental sensors networks, artificial vision, remote sensors or maritime communications and so on.

Within its scope of knowledge, atlanTTic benefits from its direct link to the School of Telecommunication Engineering of the Uvigo, third in path development in Spain, and the Technological Center of Telecommunications of Galicia – Gradiant, specialized in technology transfer to businesses.

These three pillars generate clear synergies that encompass a broad area in the professional life cycle of the researcher and the technology.

  • The technological environment

Galicia has taken a major leap in science and technology in recent years, with a significant increase in its capacities. This is thanks to better trained human resources and infrastructures in continuous optimization.

Together with the University of Vigo, the University of Santiago de Compostela and the University of A Coruña, have research groups and centers dedicated to ICT, such as CITIC or CITIUS.

Additionally, stepping up the processes to transfer technology to companies has opened a very interesting field of work for Galician researchers, especially for those engaged in telecommunications, which has sparked an interest in all the economic sectors due to its transversal nature. This is why this area of knowledge obtains an important part of the university revenues (particularly, in the case of the University of Vigo thanks to atlanTTic) from its collaborations with the industry.

In this sense, apart from the Galician Research and Development Center in Telecommunications (Gradiant), Vigo and its area host technology centers linked more directly with the most representative economic sectors in Galicia: the Galician Automotive Technology Centre (CTAG), the National Technical Centre for the Conservation of Fishing Products (ANFACO-CECOPESCA) and Metallurgy Technology Centre AIMEN.

  • Knowing Vigo

Vigo is the largest city in Galicia, with a population of almost 300,000 people and a distinctive industrial character. Vigo’s main economic sectors are fishing, automotive, shipbuilding and services.

It is located in the south of Galicia, being the lowest of the “Rías Baixas” estuaries. It has a mild Oceanic climate. Vigo combines all the services of a big city with the charm of a location where the sea and the mountain offer natural landscapes, most of them protected areas, filled with quietness but close to the city center.

The wide range of educational and healthcare services, with two public reference hospitals, along with a broad range of cultural, sports, gastronomic and leisure choices, make this city an appealing location to set up home, either temporarily or permanently, with the incentive of a moderate cost of living, in terms of prices.

Vigo and its surrounding area encompass the essence of the maritime Galicia, with beautiful beaches and landscapes, a pleasant mild climate, a gastronomy with the taste of the freshest products and a welcoming atmosphere for any newcomer.

The city offers all the services of a big city, such as a public transport network that covers the city center and extends to the surrounding areas, with connections to the beaches and nearby villages.
