About Vigo

atlanTTic is located in the area of Vigo. To better understand what the area can bring, two dimensions are worth considering: the dimension of the ecosystem related to professional development with the research and technological environment, and on the other hand the human dimension represented by the social and natural aspect. The two dimensions make up a life experience that deserves to be known.

  • The University of Vigo

atlanTTic develops its research work at the University of Vigo (UVigo), which has telecommunications as one of its main focus on science and technology transfer to the industry.

The research groups of the centre play a very important role in the 24 million euros that the University of Vigo raised for R&D activities, representing over 20% of the total expenditure of Galicia (2012) in this area. During that year UVigo created 618 R&D jobs, and 31 entrepreneurial initiatives, together with 144 technology transfer activities (almost 30% more than in 2011).

Research at the University of Vigo means to do so within the framework of a campus of scientific excellence, the Campus of Excellence do Mar, in which atlanTTic actively participates with its advances in networks of environmental sensors, artificial vision, remote sensing or maritime communications and so on.

Within its scope of knowledge, atlanTTic benefits from its direct link to the School of Engineering of Telecommunication of the Uvigo, third in trajectory in Spain, and the Technological Center of Telecomunications of Galicia – Gradiant, specialized in technology transfer to the company.

  • The technological environment

Galicia has made a major leap in science and technology in recent years, with a significant increase in its capacities thanks to increasingly better trained human resources and infrastructures in continuous optimisation.

Together with the University of Vigo, the University of Santiago de Compostela and the University of A Coruña, have research groups and centres dedicated to ICT, such as CITIC or CITIUS.

On the other hand, the intensification of the technology transfer processes to companies has opened a very interesting field of work for Galician researchers, especially for those engaged in telecommunications, which spark interest in all the economic sectors due to its transversal nature. This is the reason why this knowledge area brings together an important part of the revenue of the universities (most especially the University of Vigo thanks to atlanTTic), coming from its collaborations with the industry.

In this regard, apart from the Galician Research and Development Center in Telecommunications (Gradiant), Vigo and its area host technology centres linked more directly with the most representative economic sectors in Galicia: the Galician Automotive Technology Centre (CTAG), the National Technical Centre for the Conservation of Fishing Products (ANFACO-CECOPESCA) and Metallurgy Technology Centre AIMEN.

  • Knowing Vigo

Vigo is the largest city in Galicia, with a population of almost 300.000 people and a distinct industrial nature. Vigo’s main economic sectors are fishing, automotive, shipbuilding and services.

It is located in the south of Galicia, being the last of the “Rías Baixas” its oceanic climate is mild. The Portuguese border is less than 40Km away by motorway or highway, and there are good transport connections, either by public transport or by car with other Galician cities and towns. The other two airports in Galicia, with direct flights to destinations throughout Europe are in Santiago de Compostela and A Coruña, both accessible by motorway.

Vigo combines all the services of a big city with the charm of an environment where the sea and the mountain offer natural landscapes, most of them protected areas, filled with quietness and close to the city centre.

The wide range of educational offer and healthcare services, with two public reference hospitals, along with a variety of culture, sports, gastronomy and leisure choices, make the city an appealing location to set up home either temporarily or permanently, with the incentive of a moderate standard of living, in terms of prices.

Vigo and surroundings concentrate the essence of the maritime Galicia, with beautiful beaches and landscapes, a pleasant mild climate, a gastronomy with the taste of the freshest products and a welcoming atmosphere for any newcomer.

The city offers all the services of a big city, such as a public transport network that traverses the centre and extends to the surroundings, with connections to the beaches and nearby villages.
