Offer Description
The research group GPSC (Signal Processing in Communications Group, http://gpsc.uvigo.es) is looking for a motivated candidate to pursue a doctoral thesis in the “DocTIC” PhD programme (http://doctic.uvigo.es/programme-description). The position includes a 18-months contract under project Communication And Spatial Tracking RadiO (CASTRO), funded by the “Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento 2021 Agencia Estatal de Investigación MINISTERIO DE CIENCIA E INNOVACIÓN” of the government of Spain PID2021-122483OA-I00.
CASTRO aims to develop wireless signal processing and network architecture solutions that exploit simultaneous location and communication techniques to support next generation wireless services. The project will study both improvements in radio resource management protocols and schedulers leveraging location information, as well as advanced waveforms and channel estimation algorithms that permit the extraction of location information from the communications signal. Such goals are key trends in future mobile cellular 5G and WLAN WiFi 7 standards.
Depending on the focus subject of her/his thesis, the PhD candidate will contribute to the project in one or more of the following topics: i) Advanced signal processing algorithms for beyond 5G wireless systems, including compressed sensing channel modeling and estimation, multicarrier modulations with mobility, and hybrid beamforming for massive MIMO mmWave systems. ii) Advanced technologies for Integrated Sensing And Communications (ISAC) including location algorithms, joint estimation and reception, channel scenario ray-tracing, and training sequence and waveform design iii) Advanced Radio Resource Management in wireless networks, including limited feedback channel state information, link adaptation, precoder selection, multi-user scheduling with spatial multiplexing, with joint detection or interference canceling, and user attachment and routing in multi-hop and D2D topologies. iv) Development of Open Source tools for communications research, including standard 3GPP channel multipath model, ray-tracing simulations, full-stack 5G network simulation, and the O-RAN 5G industry standard. v) Application of Machine Learning technologies to communications systems in the PHY and MAC layers, with emphasis on sparse multipath channel estimation, mobile user location, massive MIMO beam management and multi-user scheduling or resource allocation.
What is funded
The predoctoral contract will cover the first 18 months of PhD with a yearly salary of 20.100 € with renovation based on performance. Note that in Spain all benefits such as health insurance or unemployement are included in the contract and free. During the course of this contract the candidate will be mentored in application to project funding, research grants and individual fellowships to continue up to 4 years of PhD studies and into postdoctoral applications. Depending on Uvigo regulations (currently under revision), a small PhD program registration fee may be paid by the candidate or waived.
