Expression of interest for a 2 years PhD position position within CASTRO project

PECHADA

Deadline: 30 Jan 2024 – 23:00

Offer Description

The research group GPSC (Signal Processing in Communications Group, http://gpsc.uvigo.es) is seeking for a motivated candidate to pursue a doctoral thesis in the “DocTIC” PhD programme (http://doctic.uvigo.es/programme-description). The position includes a 2-year contract under project Communication And Spatial Tracking RadiO (CASTRO),  funded by the “Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento 2021 Agencia Estatal de Investigación MINISTERIO DE CIENCIA E INNOVACIÓN” of the government of Spain PID2021-122483OA-I00.

The project Communication And Spatial Tracking RadiO (CASTRO) aims to develop wireless signal processing and network architecture solutions that exploit simultaneous location and communication techniques to support next generation wireless services. The project will study both improvements in radio resource management protocols and schedulers leveraging location information, as well as advanced waveforms and channel estimation algorithms that permit the extraction of location information from the communications signal. Such goals are key trends in future mobile cellular 5G and WLAN WiFi 7 standards.

Depending on the focus subject of her/his thesis, the PhD student will contribute to the project in one or more of the following topics: i) Advanced signal processing algorithms for beyond 5G wireless systems, including compressed sensing channel modeling and estimation, multicarrier modulations with mobility, and hybrid beamforming for massive MIMO mmWave systems. ii) Advanced technologies for Integrated Sensing And Communications (ISAC) including location algorithms, joint estimation and reception, channel scenario ray-tracing, and training sequence and waveform design iii) Advanced Radio Resource Management in wireless networks, including limited feedback channel state information, link adaptation, precoder selection, multi-user scheduling with spatial multiplexing, with joint detection or interference canceling, and user attachment and routing in multi-hop and D2D topologies. iv) Development of Open Source tools for communications research, including standard 3GPP channel multipath model, ray-tracing simulations, full-stack 5G network simulation, and the O-RAN 5G industry standard. v) Application of Machine Learning technologies to communications systems in the PHY and MAC layers, with emphasis on sparse multipath channel estimation, mobile user location, massive MIMO beam management and multi-user scheduling or resource allocation.

Skills/Qualifications
  • Bachelor/Master Degree in Telecommunications/Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Mathematics with a strong background in digital communications and wireless networks.
  • Excellent academic record.
Specific Requirements
  • Background (Research/Professional) in digital signal processing and statistics for communications (modulation, channel estimation, detection, estimation, equalization, etc.).
  • Background (Research/Professional) in state-of-the-art wireless networks (5G / WiFi6 / etc.).
  • Background (Research/Professional) in radio channel characterization (propagation, multipath, spectrum analysis, ray tracing, radio location, etc…).
  • Proficient use of high level programming languages, simulator development and open source contribution (ns-3, Python, git, Linux, and similar technologies…).
Eligibility criteria

Candidates must meet the elegibility criteria for the DocTIC programme (http://doctic.uvigo.es/how-apply). Candidates must have at least a Spanish Master’s Degree, OR a degree in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) that authorizes access to PhD, OR any other degree equivalent to the European Qualifications Framework level 7; in the fields of Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics or Mathematics. Preference those with a strong background in digital signal processing, wireless communications, networks, statistics or electromagnetism.

All the candidates who cannot prove the required academic degree will be immediately withdrawn from the selection process.

Full-time equivalent research or professional experience’ is measured from the date when the candidate obtained the degree.

Important remark : This is a Call for expressions of interest.

The Universidade de Vigo has its own official application process, hiring on the basis of merit and is strongly committed to equity and diversity within its community. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

The process has the following stages (chronologically):

  1. The candidate submits an expression of interest (EoI) (deadline: 30 Jan 2024 – 23:00 (CET))
  2. Once the official Pre-enrolment period for the PhD program starts, (1-7 Feb 2024) we will send an email to the candidate, who will proceed to the registration in the DocTIC PhD programme. Per UVigo regulation, candidates who are not enrolled in a PhD program cannot apply to the predoctoral contract position in the next stage.
  3. Once the official application process starts, we will send an email to the candidate, who will proceed to the submission of his/her formal application. Please, bear in mind that the application process is mandatory and will only be open for 5 working days. (tentative timeline: second half of March 2024)
  4. The selection committee will evaluate only the received candidatures through the official application procedure and will announce the shortlist of candidates that will pass to the next stage.
  5. The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online by the committee.
  6. The selected candidate will be notified as soon as possible after the interviews.

Application requirements for EoI: Applicants should provide an up-to-date CV, letter of motivation, and the names and contact details of one referee who is qualified to comment on your scientific/professional track record and expertise. Send the documents needed for your application to: gomezcuba@gts.uvigo.es
